Advanced lighting workshop

We had an advanced lighting workshop with our teacher Matt, he took us through the basics of good lighting to use when filming a music video and how to achieve those certain looks, he also showed us the roots for what everything is and what its called.

Flouresent lights often shortened to florries are a non disable light source that are highly popular in music videos when wanting to address a younger audience since they have that vibrant colour about them. If wanting to change colour to them you'll need to apply a different roll of colour. The fluorescent lights that we were shown had a colour combination used a lot in LGBTQ+ videos.

A red head is the common light used when filming and is given that name because the backing of the light is painted red.  A blonde is also commonly used when filming and is given that name because the backing of the light is painted yellow. The blonde is significantly bigger than the red head and much brighter. It is very important to be careful when using these lights since sometimes they can overheat and explode.

We also saw the affects of a soft box. A soft box is a wooden frame with a piece of wax-like material stretched over it. It changes the look of the footage onscreen to a softer less harsh lighting, it's the same lighting used in a bathroom and often categorised in the section of beauty lighting.

We learnt how much easier it is to shorten names for words in the studio for example fluorescent light to florries, and director of photography or cinematographer to D.O.P., not to be confused with the director. The difference between the two of them is that director of photography manages how the cameras work on set while director controls what the actors or people behind the camera do.

During this seccion we learnt some common knowledge about lighting, such as you adjust the lighting for the camera instead of the camera for the lighting because it saves many steps and is much more permanent than if it was adjusted through the camera settings. Also we learnt that you make the lights for what you see on the monitor since that gives off the best impression of what the final video will look like, also it's much easier for the other crew members to see at all times.

We also learnt about a technique that can often be applied if you're wanting to create a less harsh softer line of your actors or people behind the camera. It's when you apply a piece of tracing paper or better known as frost to the lighting source.

3 point lighting is the most commonly used lighting and is sometimes referred to as standard lighting. It is made up of Key light which is the base setting light for the person you are wanting to film, then there's Fill light which evens out all the shadows, and then finally there's back light which is when one of the lights is placed behind the person behind the camera.

We also learnt about the usefulness of a MATTE box, this item of lighting equipment is often used to block out the dirty light and give the lighting a cleaner/ smoother look.

As spoken about before with the soft box that type of lighting is often used in a bathroom, this is because it makes someone look more pretty than with standard lighting, hence why is it put in the bracket of dress lights. Practical lights however are on the contrary and are used in moments when the best lighting must be applied.
