Advanced editing workshop

My class and I took part in an advanced editing workshop where we learn the basic skills that are to come when editing a music video, this was so we could have some experience when it came to editing our own music video.

In this class we learnt that you must use a clapper board before filming every shot because then when editing its easier to find which shot you need when loosing your place.

We also learnt the importance of syncing video to music. If the video isn't in sync with the music then it'll look sloppy and be out of time.

We learnt how it is important to rename shots and group them together. For example; group 1= close ups, shot 1= shot of band member 1. It puts things into an organised fashion.

We were also taught the importance of listening to the music and illustrating what we hear. For example (when editing for a band) if you heard the sound of a drum more than other instruments then you would cuts to a shot of the drummer or (when editing for a solo artist) if the sound of a drum was heard you would use a shot taken of the singer shaking their head side to side and make it time to the drumming. We learnt that it is important to show the singers face for the first line of the song as that is the best way to engage a connection with the audience.

We were told that its important to show the audience who is who by perhaps grouping shots together and having shots of the guitarist being shown when a guitar sound is heard.

We also learnt the importance of making sure the edit is in time with the music beat, this means that the transition between shots is in time with the heard musical sounds. Its making sure the edit is clean.

On the side all of that we were also taught some good things to know when editing, such as; not to rough cut and to always be precise as it may cost you the accuracy of your video. We learnt that it's best to work on 10 seconds at a time and make those really good and not jump ahead since that could cause you to forget about a certain section. We learnt that its best to work one hour at a time since then your brain is most focused and you won't over do it. And we learnt not to show anyone until you're finished since you could start hearing opinions and it could mess with the concept and idea of your video.
